A Book Review: “The One Thing”

“The One Thing” starts with one of my favorite movie scenes. It is from the movie City Slickers, featuring Billy Crystal and Jack Palance, and it is the scene about the meaning of life. I wrote about it several years ago in this message. If you have never seen the movie, it is great for the whole family.

Given that Gary Keller and Jay Papasan started off their book with one of my favorite stories, I knew there would be a lot to like in this book. It did not disappoint.

You may recognize the name, Keller. Gary Keller is a businessman who had created great success for himself and his associates with Keller Williams Realty International, a residential real estate firm. One of the most refreshing parts of this book is that Gary does not attempt to share his insight and knowledge from a “higher place.” Rather, he relates to the reader through his own learnings, his own story of too many things on his plate, burnout and dissatisfaction – all of which prepare you to learn from his experience.

The book is divided into three sections. Part 1 is made up of The Lies we believe. Part 2 is The Truth and Part 3 is Extraordinary Results. If you only made it through Part 1 and challenged some of the beliefs you hold, your world would change for the better. However, the book truly delivers a 1-2-3 punch with its framework. It clears the decks for true learning by dispelling those false beliefs, replacing them with the truth and then aptly demonstrating how to live this in your life.

Are you wondering what the book is about? The title says it all, “The One Thing” and that is unique to you and you alone. Grab a copy of the book, download it from Audible and discover your One Thing.
