Freeway of Life

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAMultiple trips to the airport over the holidays yielded some additional insight into a popular topic this time of year, goal-setting. Follow me on this one…you’ll see the connection in a minute.

Cruising along Houston’s crowded freeways I had several occasions to witness drivers attempting to merge into fast moving freeway traffic from the entrance ramp. The most dangerous of these were not the ones accelerating quickly; it was the timid few attempting to creep into fast moving traffic. Yes, there was even a “braker” on the entrance ramp. That was an accident just waiting to happen.

As we move into this new season full of ambition and excitement for the New Year, make sure you accelerate as you come onto the entrance ramp. Whatever actions you have decided to take, goals you have set, or vision you are striving for, go full on. As Nike says “Just Do It.”

Hesitancy and braking on the entrance ramp will get you killed, literally. The moment a new action or habit meets that first sign of Resistance, press on the accelerator. It won’t feel right and it certainly won’t be your first instinct, yet it is the action necessary to keep your goal, ideal or habit from dying a premature death on the entrance ramp to life.

Ever wonder about the origin of the funky name for this coaching business? Accel – to accelerate. Us – the partnership between coach and client. Accelus.

You don’t need a backseat driver but you may just need someone to encourage you to accelerate on the entrance ramp to life.
