So you are ready to make some changes in your life and move on to bigger and better things? You want to realize the potential that you know you have. Congratulations! To make room for these improvements, you’ve got to make space and clear the clutter from your life, just as we had to do to renovate our kitchen to make improvements.
Having a clear area to make improvements encompasses two aspects: physical clutter and mental clutter. Let’s start with the physical, which is perhaps a bit easier to “see” and deal with. What is the state of your work environment? Are your files neatly organized and your desk clear? How about your e-mail inbox? Are there 50 messages or less? Does your calendar reflect what you have committed to for the day? Look beyond the appointments. Have you scheduled time to complete that report or make marketing calls? If you are not self-managed at this level, you will have a very challenging time adding something new (your much desired improvement) to your day and life.
Mental clutter is a bit more abstract. It is hard to see and made even more so as it may have been cluttering your mind for so long it appears to be part of the normal process. You could do a self-inventory to see what you uncover; however, it is very difficult for one to evaluate oneself in this way. You are simply way too attached to the subject matter! One of the best things you can do to identify mental clutter and divest yourself of it, is to involve an objective, dispassionate, third party. This third party will see you with fresh eyes and will not be caught up with the emotion of your being. They will be able to challenge you and provide new ideas and ways of thinking to move you forward. A professionally trained coach is well-suited to fill this role. You are in your life and with yourself 24/7. If you are a walking mess of mental clutter moving through cluttered environments, there is no room for the improvements you desire. Clear the air, clear your head, clear your environment, then you will have space to build the life of your dreams.
