Making it through the Messy Middle

If you have ever undertaken something new you recognize the messy middle. It is no-where land. You’ve departed from the safe harbor of your usual practice (a The Path through the Messy Middlerut perhaps) and ventured into the wild blue yonder of something new. Yet there is no charted course, no neatly defined path to take you easily and quickly on your way. You wander and stumble through the seemingly vast wasteland of the messy middle.

If you are fortunate to have a guide in the messy middle, count your blessings. This can make all the difference between success and failure in your endeavor to undertake something new. A mentor, a coach, a trainer – someone who has been there before and can provide guidance and encouragement. This guide will assist you in finding your way, yet they cannot make the way for you. They have been down this path on their own journey. Your path is yours to make.

We have all searched for and asked for “the formula” – tell me what I need to do to be successful and I will do it. I hear this often in my coaching. I have said this often when being coached. We search for answers, for a formula, outside of ourselves. The answer, the solution, lies within each of us.

To discover the solution and make our way out of the messy middle, we must be willing to go through the process. The process of discovery, of trying on things, keeping those that work and discarding those that do not. We must accept days of seemingly no progress, or regression, in order to move forward. That learning and experience is what gives us the ability and insight to find a solution, to forge a path out of the messy middle.

Rely on your guide for inspiration, a shoulder to cry on, and as an eager celebrant in all your successes – large and small. Rely on yourself for knowing what is right for you, your business and your family. It’s all there, inside of you, waiting for you to tap it, waiting for the right questions, ready and waiting to take you to the next level.
