Last week’s message brought forth the topic of being versus doing. While we get a certain level of satisfaction from doing, it will not address the frustration we may feel at the end of a day, week or year (years!) of not truly moving forward.
We may not recognize this frustration, this lack of forward movement, for what it really is. We often blame outside forces such as: management and their insatiable need for reports, the endless meeting schedule, interruptions from our co-workers or family members, for this feeling of not accomplishing. It is not that these are completely blameless, but that we feel we have no way to manage them.
That is the crux…that we have little or no control over these forces unless we live a life of solitude. What we do have control over is how we respond and how we prepare for what we do want to occur. Sounds like it requires work? You betcha! As Thomas Edison said “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.”
This is why so many of us fail to focus on the meaningful – it looks like work. Instead of “work”, we can simply keep checking items off the to-do list and have some base sense of gratification. Did you have more planned for your life than completing to-do lists?
“Work” in this sense means digging deep and uncovering your purpose in life. Yes, each of us has one and it is up to you to uncover it. For some of us, it is discovered early and easily. Others of us struggle; listening not to the voice inside, but to the millions of voices and input we receive from day one of our lives. Create white space in your life on a regular basis and listen to the voice inside.
