I am not who I see at all.
This is opposite of the fairy tale we all know: Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?* Of course the reflection gives us the answer we seek.
What if we asked the question to a different type of mirror; one that sees more than we can? We might discover that we do not see ourselves at all.
When we want something different in our lives, for something to change, we often first look to the outside world and blame it for our challenges and strife. We point our finger, not realizing that as we point, three fingers on our hand are pointing back at the true culprit. When we see that clearly, what we see in the mirror may very well frighten us. It is often hard to look at ourselves in this way; to face the tough reality of the choices we have made in the past that have brought us to where we are now. The great thing is that it creates incredible awareness; awareness that we are in control, that we do have the ability to influence the outcome of our lives. Along the way, we have also accomplished some pretty amazing things.
While at times ugly, revealing and chaotic, the reflection in the mirror can lead us to the life we have always dreamed of as long as we are willing to ask the question: Mirror, mirror on the wall, truly do I see me at all?
*Note: In researching this famous quote, I discovered that it is actually one of the greatest movie misquotes. In the animated classic “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” the actual line is “Magic Mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?”
