Now that you have your business and personal social life under control with your scheduling and presence at parties, it is time to take a closer look at the year past. It is one thing to reflect on the year on New Year’s Eve, yet you are more ambitious than that. You want to know how you did in a broader sense, not just recalling the few events or accomplishments that come to mind over a glass of bubbly.
“Wrapping it up” or reflection is an important component to your success. It is one thing to set goals; measuring your progress lets you know how effective you have been. So grab your calendar, notebook and any other means you use to make note of your activity and let’s revisit 2012.
If you set goals for 2012, review those. Which were accomplished? Where did you fall short? Which goals needed to be modified during the year? Which were completely forgotten? Have some of your goals now become well-established habits? Applaud yourself and sip champagne for those goals met.
For goals that did not come to fruition, can you identify why? Were the goals way beyond lofty? Or did they suffer from “wish list-itis”? That is, were they goals without an action plan, a wish list? If you look more closely, do you see unmet goals that were “shoulds” instead of goals with deep meaning for you?
Assessing your year is not just about whether or not you met the goals you set at the first of the year. It is understanding what led to your success with some and failures with others. Understanding this prepares you for a stronger goal setting exercise for 2013.
What if you didn’t set goals for 2012? Do the same exercise with your calendar, notebook, journal, etc., and note your accomplishments. You didn’t have the same opportunity to realize your potential, but as we are all growth-oriented beings, I am sure you have some noteworthy accomplishments. Start now to prepare yourself for an amazing 2013.
Wrap it up and write it down:
- Use your calendar, journal and notebook to review the year and your accomplishments
- Compare those accomplishments to the goals you set
- Assess the circumstances for any shortcomings
- Cheers to all you did accomplish!
