How Dynamic is Your Team?

energy

As she entered the room the energy was palpable.  A force of nature had arrived, bringing with her an excitement that had not been noticeably missing until she was there.  The group shifted and recalibrated awaiting to see what would happen now that she had arrived.

Rising to the occasion were the others in the group with similar strengths – those that enjoy being “on stage” and have a unique ability to influence others.  Until now they had kept their energy muted but the atmosphere had changed and it was time to charge it up.

Another group, those strong in relationship building, were pleased to see the shift in the room.  The focus of the meeting had been so task-oriented, and even though the relationship builders outnumbered the others, they had not been able to influence the tone of the meeting.  The changes being discussed did not consider the impact on employees and clients, the people part of the equation.  The influencer would change this, however it would take follow-up work from the relationship builders to make sure that the people impact remained a consideration of the project.  The influencer would be on to the next project before this one was complete.

The strategists in the group knew they would be listening for a little while in order to understand the impact of the influencer’s contributions.  The increase in the energy level was not particularly welcomed by the strategists, in fact it was a bit annoying.  It made it more challenging to think and consider all the options with the sheer amount of conversation and energy that would now be generated.  However, it would certainly add to the list of important details that needed to be considered for the project and the strategists appreciated the ability to brainstorm.  They knew they would have some time after the meeting to consider all the options.

Those in the room with strengths in the executing domain, knew they would have to endure a bit more conversation than they typically enjoyed but the arrival of the influencing member of the team would help get things moving.  The meeting had gotten a bit bogged down by the details and the tangents the strategists so loved to explore.  Important?  Yes, but not necessary for the entire group to be subjected to.  The relationship builders had been happy to participate, not wanting to rock the boat as they hoped the subject of people would come into the conversation. The influencer would get the impact of people on the table and those strong in executing would be able to get action items and deadlines finalized.

The team was complete and ready to move the project forward.

Who is on your team?  Are there enough of the executing style to get a project completed?  Is there an influencer to get buy-in from clients and team members?  How many relationship builders, the glue of any team, are available to make the sum greater than the parts?  Who is strategizing by looking ahead and considering all the options?
