Do You Know Who Your Influencers Are?

Who are the Influencers on your team?  Does their natural talent stand-out?  Or are they a bit subtle, perhaps taking on the tone of your team?  Identifying and drawing out those with influencing themes are crucial to the success of your projects and your business.

Influencers are identified by the energy they bring to a room and an effort they are passionate about.  Sometimes seen as self-serving if they are not able to play to their strengths, Influencers get the message out about your undertaking.

According to global results of the CliftonStrengths® assessment, Influencers are a minority in the world population.  You might not think so given their “presence” in the media, on the stage, in your office, on the phone.  Theirs is a rare but powerful presence.  Helping them recognize this natural talent and harness it for good can bring immense value to your team.

Of the leadership domains, Influencers tend to be independent similar to those with the Executing theme.  If not understood their natural talents can make them appear self-focused and not interested in the greater good of the team.  People are at the heart of everything the Influencer does and once the talents of these individuals are directed and focused, they are a positive force.

How do you recognize the Influencers in your group?  They usually give themselves away by being the talkers of the group.  However, if there is a component of strategic thinking in the Influencer their presence may appear more quiet and thoughtful as the strategic side considers all the options.

Combined with an Executing style your Influencer may be so busy getting things done, that they overlook the importance of winning others over to the project.  If Influencer is coupled with Relationship Building talents, just look for the group gatherings to find your Influencer.  They may need encouragement to leave the nurturing of relationships to others stronger in this theme.

The nature of the work you do and the contributors you already have in place impact the chemistry of your team.  Identify your team’s natural talents, allow those strengths to shine through and up the performance of your group.
